Update, and a little something to get you through your day

In Random on January 28, 2015 at 10:22 am

I have neglected my blog a bit.  In going through old posts and things today, I realized how outdated some of it is – namely my Who, Me? page.  So, I updated it.  There’s more accurate info and a few pictures on there now.  Feel free to take a look, check it out if that strikes your fancy.

And also, if you’re like me and need a little pick-me-up to get through the day without a full on breakdown sometimes, I’ve included the following instructional exercise strange and oddly entertaining video for your viewing pleasure.

Spoken Word Superstars

In Opinion, Opinion/Personal, Personal, Recommendations on May 2, 2014 at 8:08 pm

Almost everyone can tie themselves to alcoholism.  Either you have a family member who has battled it in the past, or still currently is, or you had a friend growing up with a parent who struggled with it.  For those of you fighting it yourself, I give you a virtual handshake.  While I have not struggled with an addiction, I have seen others and I know how difficult it can be.

Alcoholism runs in my family, both sides.  Both ym grandfathers were alcoholics.  My mother’s father quit drinking before I was born, but I caught bits and pieces of stories growing up from the bad days.  I witnessed how much his drinking and behavior while intoxicated still affected my family, despite his being sober.  It was obvious that fixing the problem may not always cancel out the conseuences.  My father’s father never beat his addiction to alcohol and, also before I was born, passed away.  Again, through family stories, I was made aware that his alcoholism maifested itself in 1-2 week long benders every couple of months or so.  During his last week long bender, he took his own life.

Whatever You’re Doing, Stop Now And Watch…

In Opinion, Opinion/Personal, Random, Recommendations on March 12, 2013 at 7:14 pm

Watch.  Just watch this.  This woman amazes me.  Beautiful, fit, a mom, a wife, a singer, apparently a dancer, an all around success.  This song gets me every time, and the video is stunning.  So just sit back and watch it and love it, because I do…

Savior of Reality TV Might be on MTV…

In Opinion, Opinion/Personal, Personal, Random, Recommendations on March 11, 2013 at 10:54 pm

I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I’ve turned into a leaking, whimpering mess these days.  What’s done it this time?  MTV.

I know, I know, but hold up and let me explain.  MTV has somehow managed to air a show that has made it to the second season that is actually worth something.  No sleazy, no partying, no gmy/tan/laundry or whatever the hell that whole thing was.  No, this show focuses on positive things.  That almost sounds like a foreign phrase anymore.  Granted, this show is not at all about music, but it is one of the few shows on television that is real.  It is called World of Jenks.  If you haven’t heard of it, check it out.  It’s worth it.  First of all, Jenks is a young guy that actual has plans and interests.  He looks for outstanding people to showcase using his abilities and knowledge of film.  And outstanding people does he ever find…

I’m Easily Entertained and Desperate for Funnies

In Funny, Random on March 10, 2013 at 8:07 pm

I have been on a search lately for things to lift my spirits.  One of the best things ever in the world is to laugh so hard that you cry.  Your stomach hurts, you can’t breathe, your face is red, your mascara smeared, and you love it.  At least I do, anyways.  It’s also supposed to be good for mental and physical health.  So I came across a video called “People Yelling Like Goats Yelling Like People.”  I was super confused, so of course I had to watch it.  Laughed my ass off.  But this led me to even more questions, such as what inspired this video and where are these goats that sound like humans?  And then, by pure chance, my friend shows me a Youtube video that’s basically a goat compilation a couple of days later.  I literally almost fell of her couch and could not catch my breath through the entire video.  I think  it’s always important for people to have a good laugh as often as possible, so I thought I’d share.  If your mind is an off as mine, you’ll find this quite amusing as well.

I don’t know how the people kept straight faces…I’m still laughing.

Then I found this, which I love.  I’m not a big Taylor Swift fan anyways, but man these goats are killing it!

A Turn of Phrase…In the Wrong Direction

In Opinion, Opinion/Personal, Personal, Random on January 2, 2013 at 7:44 pm

A turn of phrase is a distinctive expression.  The world is full of them, and probably has been since the origin of language.  But recently I’ve noticed a trend – no, a pandemic.  A God-awful outbreak of people wanting to be “original” by creating a new word, phrase, or motto.  These new turns of phrase are such a wrong turn that they are riding shotgun with Eliza Dushku – the irony here not being only that she starred in a movie entitled Wrong Turn, but that the making of this deplorable movie in itself was a “wrong turn” for all those involved.

Since we’ve just started a new year and I recently read an article about a college who created a list of words to “retire,” I’ve decided to explain why I think some things should be not just retired, but packed up and shipped off and shoved into a dusty corner of an old closet to be forgotten about forever.

1. YOLO

You Only Live Once.”  No shit.  Thank you Captain Obvious.  Humans do not have nine lives.  Pretty sure we are ALL aware of this.  This is not an acceptable excuse to make poor decisions or be dumb.  Adding “YOLO” at the end of, I don’t know, any statement involving reckless partying or dangerous sexual habits does not exempt you from consequences just because you’re young and hip.  Or dope.  Or whatever they say now.  Case in point: the rapper who was drinking and driving and tweeted it – cuz, ya know, YOLO – and shortly thereafter wrecked and died.  Irony?  I don’t know.  I personally prefer acronyms for other pointless things that are a bit more interesting, such as You Obviously Like Owls.  Maybe YOLOreos…

Nugget #34: Girl, You Hippo Sexy

In Cleverness, Funny, Pictures/Images on December 31, 2012 at 10:07 pm

Apparently, in the Madagascar movie, the male hippo is trying to pick up the female hippo and uses some pretty funny lines about her large size.  So we decided to use them inappropriately when we got separated after a long night out full of drinks:

IMG_2423Even worse was when I went on Youtube to see if I could find a clip of the scene where he says these things.  Instead, I found this:

Guess who’s about to be sending this video to a ho on Facebook 🙂

Things I Want To Do One Day

In Personal, Random on December 9, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Save up money and take a year off from working just to explore things.

Take a painting class.

Move to a loft in a big city.

Travel overseas.

Get backstage at a concert and/or onto a tour bus to hang with a band – in a non-crazy non-creepy non-groupie way.

Follow a tour across at least 3 stops.

Do something fun all by myself.

Drive cross-country.

Get something published.

Invent something.

Make a video diary of a crazy weekend with friends.

Finish writing a book.

Hitchhike – with a buddy, of course, so I don’t disappear.

Set a 24-48 hour period in which I am unable to say no – within reason.  I will not do a hit.  Just saying.

Get the 3 tattoos I have had planned for years – then maybe more.

Attend a big fashion show.

Make a Youtube video of something choreographed.

Feel genuinely happy for no reason at all.

I know I probably won’t complete some of these things, just due to circumstances beyond my control, such as time or money, but if some miracle somehow occurred and all the pieces fell into place and I had the opportunity, these are the things I wouldn’t have to give a second thought to.  I’m sure I will discover more, as that is how life should be.  Maybe I’ll continue to find new and interesting things to be able to compile a whole second list.  And maybe by then, I’ll be able to have some of these crossed off…

Recommending: Books of Randomness

In Opinion, Opinion/Personal, Personal, Recommendations on November 20, 2012 at 10:09 pm

I love reading, and something that’s essential to good reading is having a good story line with good characters.  However, I have discovered a couple of gems that I think everyone should pay attention to for a couple of minutes.  And by that, I mean these books will actually only take a couple of minutes.  There is a clear theme and many different characters.  The plot is not hard to follow at all, the writing is short and simple, and the books as a whole are straight to the point and very entertaining.  I suggest buying one for yourself, buying one as a gift, or at least stop by your local Spencer’s Gifts (that’s where I found it) and taking the 2-3 minutes to read them in the store.

Each page features a different character discussing his or her or its friends.  For example, in All My Friends Are Dead there is a tree with a face stating that all his friends are end tables.  Turn the page and you find an end table with a face stating that he was never friends with that guy.  That’s priceless!  In All My Friends Are Still Dead, there’s an angel complaining because all his friends are, in fact, still alive.  Again, priceless!  Actually, the price for each is around $10 or so.  There are even Youtube videos of people reading these books, but I still recommend reading it for yourself, preferably out loud.  I tend to think things are always funnier out loud.  Kudos, Avery Monsen and Jory John!
